The Magician

One thing I like to do is take a color and maybe a little bit of white and just spread it around the canvas to see what patterns emerge. On this canvas there happened to appear a magician performing his act on stage. The graphite pencil outlining the figures represents the thin layer of illusion that could fail at any moment.

This is the first painting to draw inspiration from cave art. I did not know it then, but the influence of cave paintings started to come through here and will continue to develop in future paintings.
